Scott and Kate’s chemistry was not instant. They became best friends and later bloomed into something wonderful and lead to this fun, relaxed, and flower-filled wedding. We were lucky enough to get to talk to Scott and Kate about everything leading up to the wedding, including the romantic proposal in the most romantic city in the world, Paris, France in Eiffel Tower and how their wedding day was everything they both had hoped for.
Tell us a little bit about yourself.
Scott and I met whilst he was Team Physiotherapist for a local Rugby Union club, in Toowoomba. I would watch the game each weekend with friends and we’d all go to the local pub afterwards. The chemistry wasn’t instant, but certainly came out of nowhere and we’ve been best friends ever since! When you know, you know!
Tell us a little about the proposal and the lead up to the wedding?
We went on a 6-week trip around Europe in September 2015, and he carried the ring with him at all times for 5 of those weeks – very sneaky! I now know why he was sweating and nervous when he was searched at the Brisbane Airport. He didn’t want them to go through his bag in front of me in case they took the ring out of a pocket in his backpack. At one point I was even packing and carrying the backpack it was in for TWO DAYS! I couldn’t believe it when he told me!
We were having dinner on the Eiffel Tower on one of our last nights in Paris. After dinner, we went outside and whilst admiring the view from the top, I turned around and he was on one knee! I was shaking, emotional and guarding my hand with my life from the gypsies that were everywhere at the bottom of the monument. He hates that I laugh at this but because he was so nervous he went to put the ring on my right hand and I had to correct him! We finished off the night with a beautiful cruise along the Seine River. It was the most perfect proposal and one I’m very proud to tell. My ring was even custom designed by Scott and our jeweller, which makes it even more perfect.
What was the inspiration behind your wedding theme / vibe?
The inspiration behind the day was to just be as fun, relaxed and as filled with flowers as possible! And I think we definitely achieved this – with a lot of Pinterest research of course! 😉
Favourite detail and/or moment of the day (besides becoming husband and wife of course! or Wife and Wife, or Husband and Husband!)
Walking out of the chapel, and seeing our friends and family throwing all of the beautiful, colourful petals! I knew it’d be the best photo and it really was! As we sat down for our reception, our photographers handed us this gorgeous little book of some polaroids they took throughout the day – the petal photo was in there and it made me cry with happiness! Receiving some photos from the day already was not what I was expecting and took me by surprise. It was a beautiful gesture, and really made me treasure every moment of the night.
Did you undertake any DIY projects, if so what?
Yes! I designed and printed our menus, my family and I arranged the flowers for the centrepieces and my wonderful father and I created our seating chart! My SIL and I designed the stationery together. My family, in laws and I did all of the setting up the day prior as well, which I loved because I could really create the atmosphere and vibe I was after.
Any family or religious traditions incorporated into your day?
Scott and I both wore a piece of jewellery that means a lot to us on our day. Scott wore a ring his late grandfather used to wear on special occasions, and I wore a bracelet that was given to me by my great, great maternal grandmother. She had worn it on her wedding day in June 1909! It is a tradition that all Williams’ descendant brides wear the bracelet on their wedding day. I wore my late grandmothers engagement ring also on my Right hand, so she was still a part of our day and Scott wore the suit he bought in Venice that he wore on the night he proposed. We are quite sentimental people so, these little touches were perfect for us.
What does marriage mean to you?
Kate: “Marriage means unity and building a foundation with your best friend where you can conquer the world together and support each other through triumphs and battles.”
Scott: “Marriage is to make a lifelong commitment to your soul mate and to show her how much you love her each day!”
Talk to us about your dress, where is it from? How long did it take to find etc etc
My stunning wedding dress was designed by Wendy Makin. I booked my appointment with her, tried on a few dresses but knew it was the one straightaway! I think I tried about 6 dresses on in total, over two stores (one in Toowoomba, and one in Brisbane). I thought my chosen dress (Natisse) was a little too poof-y for the vibe I was after for our wedding, so the lovely ladies at Wendy’s showroom trialled making the underlay a mermaid fit. It was an instant love, and so perfect!
Any funny stories in the lead up to or on the day?
Nothing comes to mind for leading up to the wedding. However, on the day it started raining and our lead singer in our band couldn’t sing due to laryngitis! Luckily, the rain had passed by the time our Ceremony had concluded. As for the band, funnily enough one of the singers is Fijian and had just brought his family over to Australia for a holiday. This meant we had 5 beautiful Fijian men singing on our day with more soul than I had ever anticipated!
My 2-yo nephew, Archer was in our wedding party and decided whilst we were signing the registry it would be a great time to kill flies that were buzzing in the window behind us – that definitely had our guests giggling!
Advice for other couples planning a wedding?
Stay strong and stand your ground with the decisions that mean the most to your and your fiancé for your big day. It gets stressful at times, regardless of how much of a relaxed person you are, and that’s okay. Make sure you have someone you can talk to about your stresses and don’t be afraid to ask for help with what needs to be done. Finally though, remember it is the one day you can truly make your own. The one day you are able to represent all the things yourself and your fiancé love and to just enjoy it all because it really does blow over so quickly!
